What is speed cloth?

As far as we can tell the term poker speed cloth has been used by various suppliers for what we think is better described as card suited poker cloth. However, the stock we have handled has fairly pronounced threads in it that create the pattern and we have found playing cards can catch on these pronounced features diverting the playing card from the place they were aimed at by the poker dealer. We speculate that speed cloth originates from pool, billiard and snooker baize supplies where the flat surface and various textures may well make a difference to those games. Therefore speed cloth may well be just plain cloth with tiny interwoven threads that will allow cards to move speedily across them. However, we found a lot of these cloths are polyester based and that can create static electricity when rubbed on certain plastic playing cards and at slow speeds such playing cards can stop instantly or significantly change direction.
